Earthquake Preparedness
Drop
Cover
Hold On
  • If a table or desk is not available to drop, cover, and hold, brace yourself against an interior wall; crouch down and cover your head and neck.
  • Move less than 10 feet to a safe spot.
  • Avoid using doorways during an earthquake
    • Doorways may not be structurally reinforced.
    • Swinging doors may cause injury.
    • Standing in a doorway exposes you to flying glass and other debris.
  • If indoors: stay indoors and move away from windows and drop, cover, and hold.
  • Most people are injured while outside in an earthquake from falling glass and building debris.

If an earthquake happens and you are...

In bed: Stay in bed, hold on and protect your head with a pillow and blankets. Keep a pair of slippers or shoes underneath your bed to use after shaking stops to avoid injuring feet from broken glass and debris. Be mindful of objects/pictures above bed; anchor securely.

Outside: Move away from buildings, streetlights, power lines, and trees.

Driving: Slow down, pull to side of road until shaking stops.

Conduct a home hazard hunt and identify potential nonstructural problems before an earthquake strikes. For example, store heavy objects on lower shelves and lighter objects on upper shelves. Strap water heater and anchor bookshelves to the wall.
