Tsunamis

A tsunami is caused by an underwater earthquake or landslide

  • A tsunami is a series of waves that can travel 400-600 miles per hour in open water.
  • Tsunamis slow down as they approach land, and the waves become larger.
  • Tsunamis can effect areas up to two miles inland.
  • A tsunami can reach land in as little as 5 minutes after an earthquake.
  • The last large scale tsunami to hit the Oregon coast was in 1964 which was caused by an Alaskan earthquake. There were 4 deaths associated with this tsunami. Campers on the beach at Newport drowned. Tsunamis generated from out-of-area earthquakes (Alaska, Japan…) may take hours to reach land.
  • If you feel an earthquake while on the coast, Drop, Cover, and Hold.
  • Once the shaking has stopped, head inland and to higher ground quickly on foot. Take your Disaster Supplies Kit, or at least a battery operated radio.
  • Remain on higher ground and listen to the battery operated radio for directions and when an all clear has been issued by emergency officials to return to lower ground.

As much as 90% of the damage related to all natural disasters (excluding drought) is caused by what?
