Red Cross Responds to Three Fires
PORTLAND, Ore.—April 29, 2003— Red Cross volunteers
were busy with residential fires throughout Portland area and
surrounding communities in recent days.
On Friday, April 25, three Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers
were called to NE Going Street in Portland to provide vouchers
for lodging for four individuals. Emergency responders urged residents
to leave their apartments until faulting wiring was replaced resulting
in a call to the Red Cross.
Two DAT volunteers were contacted on Saturday, April 26 at 2:00pm
regarding an apartment fire on Columbia Boulevard in St. Helens.
Four residents were affected by a kitchen fire and were provided
vouchers for lodging.
On Monday, April 28 at 7:45pm, three volunteers assisted an individual
who lost his apartment on NE 102nd in Portland. Vouchers for food,
clothing and lodging were provided.
“The Oregon Trail Chapter not only serves the Portland
area, but also surrounding communities in Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook
and Yamhill Counties,” said DAT volunteer Becky Emme of
St. Helens. “We are always in need of more volunteers, particularly
in rural areas, so we can get to people in need as quickly as
possible.”
This assistance was offered at no charge to Red Cross disaster
clients, who are served thanks to the generosity of Oregonians
supporting the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.
