RED CROSS CALLED TO CANTEEN AT
THREE-ALARM CHURCH FIRE
PORTLAND, Ore.-May 5, 2003-Red Cross volunteers were called at
7:45am to help more than 40 firefighters refuel and rehydrate
as they battle a three-alarm church fire on SE Hogan in Gresham.
The American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter is typically called
by local fire bureaus to assist individuals and families affected
by fire. The Red Cross can provide vouchers for lodging food,
clothing and other immediate needs. Sometimes local fire bureaus
call the Red Cross to assist firefighters, as was the case this
morning.
Trained Red Cross volunteers can swiftly set up mobile feeding
units throughout the Oregon Trail Chapter’s seven county
service area. Food, coffee and other beverages are provided to
ensure that firefighters have the energy to combat large blazes.
Red Cross canteen services are also requested during search and
rescue efforts to support emergency workers and volunteers. Oregon
Trail Chapter volunteers provided food and hot beverages for the
rescue teams searching for a missing snowshoer on Mount Hood last
March .
This assistance was provided thanks to the generosity of Oregonians
supporting the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.
