Red Cross Volunteers Help Cornelius
Family
PORTLAND, Ore. – December 14, 2004 –
American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers responded
to a residential fire that caused major damage to a home in
Cornelius.
Four fire engines responded shortly after 6:00 p.m. to an external
fire that attacked the home, resulting in damage to contents
and structure. Thankfully, three residents escaped but two house
cats unfortunately did not survive.
Two Red Cross volunteers arrived at 7:40 p.m. to provided cash
assistance and resources for housing, furniture, clothing, shoes,
coats and personal supplies. Red Cross comfort kits, containing
basic toiletries, were distributed to affected residents before
volunteers departed at 12:20 a.m.
John E. Bartley, III, Red Cross disaster action team relief
leader, said, “Our new client assistance cards make it
much easier to help families. We are able to activate a debit
card so families can purchase new clothing, shoes and coats—wherever
it is convenient for them. It makes simplifies their recovery
process for them so they are not tied to working with certain
merchants and or manage excessive paperwork.”
The assistance is offered at no charge to Red Cross disaster
clients, who are served thanks to the generosity of Oregonians
supporting the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter.
