Red Cross Responds to Two Fires in 24
Hours
PORTLAND, Ore. – December 9, 2004 –
American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers responded
to two fires in 24 hours.
The first fire affected a family residing in NE Portland. It
started in the kitchen in the early evening of December 7. Six
Red Cross volunteers arrived on the scene, providing cash assistance
for lodging, meals, clothing and other immediate needs. Volunteers
made arrangements at a nearby motel and stress responder volunteers
talked with the family about what they experienced and how they
may react emotionally in the coming days.
On December 8, Red Cross volunteers were notified around 6:30
p.m. of a fire that started when a bathroom ceiling fan sparked,
igniting a shower curtain. Nine volunteers arrived in Tualatin
to assist the displaced family of four. The family also received
financial assistance and support to help them take the first
steps toward recovery.
Many of the volunteers who responded to these fires were new
to Oregon Trail Chapter. They contacted the Red Cross after
seeing the relief operation provided by Red Cross volunteers
during an unprecedented hurricane season. More than 400 Oregonians
were moved to volunteer after seeing the devastation in Florida
this fall.
