Evergreen International Aviation Supports
American Red Cross Relief Efforts in South Asia
PORTLAND, Ore. – January 17, 2005 –
In response to the tragic events in South Asia and Eastern Africa,
Evergreen International Aviation is supporting the American
Red Cross international response efforts through the donated
use of a Boeing 747-200 freighter aircraft. The aircraft will
transport relief supplies procured by the American Red Cross
to the nation of Sri Lanka on January 18, 2005.
The American Red Cross is providing lifesaving help in the
form of food, clean water, and sanitation, and other relief
items like tents, hygiene kits and cooking utensils.
“The donation of transport from Evergreen International
Airlines is helping the American Red Cross rush aid to the victims
of this devastating disaster,” said Skip Seitz, Senior
Vice President of Growth and Integrated Development for the
American Red Cross. “We are grateful to Evergreen for
their support in getting these relief supplies to those who
need them most. Evergreen’s contribution allows the Red
Cross to stretch our donated dollars further and provide additional
services to disaster victims.”
“We are proud to partner with American Red Cross in support
of the international Red Cross response to help the people of
Sri Lanka,” says Evergreen Humanitarian and Relief Services
President, Blythe Berselli. “Evergreen has established
a legacy of assisting those in need and we hope this flight
impacts some of the five million people in need of urgent aid
as a result of this disaster.”
In addition to supplies, teams of American Red Cross experts
have been deployed to some of the affected areas and are working
hard to provide support to the ever-growing disaster relief
effort. Red Cross workers are currently supporting relief efforts
including distribution of supplies, logistics, tracing and family
reunification and psychosocial services. Psychosocial support
helps people to deal with stress-related mental health problems
and psychological traumas as a result of disasters.
The American Red Cross is ready to help whenever disaster strikes.
Local Red Cross chapters respond to disasters – large
and small – every day including winter storms, flooding,
mudslides and house fires, which are referred to as the “silent
disasters” since they don’t necessarily make headlines
but are devastating to affected families
Through the support of generous donors, the Red Cross provides
the means for emergency water, food, shelter, clothing, emotional
support and more.
