Red Cross Volunteers Respond to 3 Alarm Fire

PORTLAND, Ore. – November 18, 2006 –Four American Red Cross volunteers from The Oregon Trail chapter responded to an early morning three-alarm fire in S.E. Portland at the Star Crest apartment complex located at 126th and S.E. Alder St. The initial call came to the Portland Fire Dept. at 2:15A with the Red Cross arriving on the scene shortly after 3:00A.

Six units were damaged by the fire which was centered on the central stairwell of the affected units. Cause of the fire is under investigation. One resident was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation but there were otherwise, no injuries from the fire. Several residents were trapped by the smoke and fire and rescued from their units by ladder evacuation. Residents displaced from their units were able to be accommodated temporarily in vacant apartments in the complex or at the homes of friends and relatives.

Fire affected residents were given comfort kits and assistance for their immediate needs through the balance of the weekend to be followed by casework assistance at Oregon Trail  chapter headquarters for those in need beginning on Monday morning.
