Red Cross Responds to Apartment House Fire on Thanksgiving Day

PORTLAND, Ore. – November 23, 2006 –Two American Red Cross volunteers from the Oregon Trail Chapter began their Thanksgiving day early by responding to a two alarm fire at the Parkway Garden Apartments located at 14200 N.E. Sandy Blvd. in Portland. The Red Cross was on the scene by 8:00A rendering assistance to the residents in the form of provision for lodging, food and clothing.

Two residents were displaced from fire-afflicted units by a fast moving fire, which resulted in the occupants escaping with only the clothes on their back. Red Cross client services caseworkers will continue to work with the families in the coming days to provide additional assistance as needed. The Parkway Garden Apartment Fire was one of two fires, which rousted Red Cross workers early on Thanksgiving morning.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Local Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters every 40 hours on average.
