Oregon Trail Chapter Latest News

PORTLAND, Ore. – November 7, 2006 –10 a.m. – Twenty-two Tillamook residents displaced by flooding spent the night at a Red Cross shelter at the Tillamook Fairgrounds, and more are expected today.

The American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter opened a shelter for affected residents at 5:30 p.m. Monday when homes and an RV park near Highway 6 and McKinster Road were threatened by the flooding of the Wilson River.

No hotel rooms remain available in the area. Hot meals and dry, safe lodging are being provided to flood-affected residents in Tillamook County at the Red Cross shelter. Assessments by a Red Cross nurse and disaster mental health counselors will be available as needed.

An exceptionally busy week for the Red Cross, the shelter activity in Tillamook marks the sixth response since Friday for the Oregon Trail Chapter, which included three fires, a canteen operation for Multnomah County Search and Rescue, and another flooding at an apartment in SE Portland.

Trained Red Cross disaster response volunteers are on standby for other potential flood-related incidents and home fires in the Oregon Trail Chapter’s seven-county service area.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
