Red Cross tips to stay warm during power outages
PORTLAND, Ore. – December 15, 2006 –Disaster Relief Workers from the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross braved wind and rain Thursday night to assist the residents of two metro area homes crushed under the weight of trees toppled by the storm that ravaged the region.
Two-person Disaster Relief Teams were sent to Hillsboro and Damascus, where families were rudely pushed from their homes after large trees came crashing down on their houses during the storm.
The residents have been placed in area hotels and provided Red Cross Client Assistance Cards, which allow for the purchase of food and other necessities, until other arrangements can be made and repairs begun.
No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Local Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters every 40 hours on average. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from Oregonians. Financial gifts help provide shelter, food, clothing, counseling and other immediate assistance to those in need. Call (503) 284-1234 or visit www.redcross-pdx.org
