Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation and Red Cross Partner to Help Businesses and Nonprofits Provide Lifesaving Training
New Red Cross program will help businesses prepare for disasters and emergencies

PORTLAND, Ore. – March 22, 2006 – The American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter and the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation are partnering to provide lifesaving training to local businesses and nonprofits that would otherwise not be able to pay for training.

The Weyerhaeuser Workplace Safety Fund will provide scholarships and matching funds to organizations with limited resources.

“For Weyerhaeuser, this is a win for community safety,” said Jackie Lang, regional communications manager for Weyerhaeuser.  “Safety is a priority everyday at Weyerhaeuser. We see this as a way to champion safety in our community while also stepping up to be a good corporate citizen.”

On Friday March 24, the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement will be one of the first beneficiaries of this funding when staff receive CPR and first aid training. Media are invited to observe the training at the Council office at 108 NW 9 th Avenue, Suite 201 between 11:00 am and 12:00pm .

The creation of this fund coincides with a new workplace safety program the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter is offering local businesses. Together We Prepare Oregon first aid and preparedness presentations provide an alternative to Red Cross first aid and CPR certification that is more affordable and requires less time to complete. The presentation is 90 to 120 minutes in length and can be taught at businesses with 10 or more participants.

Each employee will receive a participant's booklet and a first aid and emergency reference guide. Participants also receive an Under the Table Workstation Safety Tube, which includes a light stick, whistle and other lifesaving items to help employees during an emergency evacuation.

“Businesses have expressed a need for flexibility with their training options,” said Stephanie Morgan , Health and Safety Director for the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter. “With the certified and non-certified course option and the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation's generous support, businesses with time and budget constraints won't have to eliminate lifesaving training for their employees.”
