Oregon Trail Chapter Latest News

PORTLAND, Ore. – March 30, 2006 – Four Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center staff members will receive Extraordinary Personal Action awards from Mary Loftin, executive director of the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter, on Sunday April 2 nd .

The awards presentation will take place at 12pm at the 50 meter pool at the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex located at 15707 SW Walker Road in Beaverton .

The awards will be presented to Jennifer Campo, Kevin McIntosh, Amir Kordeie, and Lizbeth Fuller for their actions at the Aquatic Center which helped save the life of Wade Burggraf. The award recipients had completed courses in Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer in Red Cross programs.

On February 12, Howard Roberts, shift supervisor and a trained lifeguard at the Tualatin Hills pool, noticed Burggraf appeared to be in pain after swimming. Roberts asked Burggraf how he was feeling and Burggraf responded that his chest was hurting and that he was having trouble breathing.

Lifeguard Kevin McIntosh called 9-1-1 and reported a possible heart attack. Roberts and the pool staff assisted Burggraf and continued to monitor his condition until a Metro West ambulance arrived and took Burggraf to St. Vincent Medical Center where he underwent double bypass heart surgery.

Because the staff at Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center were trained, empowered and prepared, they responded appropriately to Burggraf's heart attack symptoms and saved his life.
