Oregon Trail Chapter Latest News

PORTLAND, Ore. – May 19 , 2006 – Seven American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers responded to a three-alarm fire in a northeast Portland apartment complex to provide immediate assistance to affected residents. The responders included a disaster mental health provider to offer emotional support, as well as family service caseworkers.

The fire occurred at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday evening on NE Sandy Boulevard at 152 nd Avenue , with approximately 80 firefighters responding from Portland Fire and Rescue and Gresham fire and Emergency Services. Multnomah County authorities alerted the Red Cross at around 7:45 p.m.

Eight units suffered varying degrees of damage. Initially, Red Cross responders assisted four families totaling 17 people with food, clothing, temporary lodging, and medical and emotional support. Red Cross client services caseworkers will continue to work with the families in the coming days to provide additional assistance as needed.

This was the second multi-alarm fire to which Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers had responded within 24 hours. Wednesday evening, six Red Cross workers provided emergency canteen services to more than 100 firefighters and other emergency workers fighting a four-alarm fire at an electrical supply company in southeast Portland .
