Red Cross Volunteers Respond To Aid Residents Displaced by Apartment Fire
PORTLAND, Ore. – May 28, 2006 – 12 volunteers from the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter responded to a multi-unit apartment fire in Milwaukie early Sunday. The responders included a nurse and family service caseworkers.
Red Cross was notified of the fire at 2:37 A.M. by Clackamas County Fire, who dispatched four engines to the scene.
The fire caused severe damage to the apartment complex, located in the 8100 block of SE Lake Rd. , forcing 46 residents from their homes. Some units were deemed a total loss, while others may be made habitable again following repairs for smoke and water damage.
Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter for displaced residents at Christ the King Parish School in Milwaukie . The shelter will provide food, clothing, toiletries and sleeping facilities. 16 residents initially sought refuge at the shelter, and more may do so if their attempts at making other arrangements are not successful. Some residents indicated they would try to stay with friends or relatives.
An unknown number of pets were also displaced. Red Cross caseworkers are assisting residents in finding temporary homes for pets whose owners whose apartments were damaged.
