Red Cross Volunteers Respond to Apartment Fire

PORTLAND, Ore. – August 19, 2006 – American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers responded to a two-alarm fire at the Sterling Pointe apartment complex this morning to provide immediate assistance to affected residents.

The fire, which started in an unoccupied unit, left four apartments uninhabitable. Eight Red Cross responders, mostly family service caseworkers, are assisting five adults and three children with lodging and food for three days until residents can move to other units in the complex.  Red Cross client services caseworkers will continue to work with the family in the coming days to provide additional assistance as needed.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue responded to the multi-unit fire on Osprey Drive at approximately 8:30 a.m. Red Cross responders were assisting on the scene within 45 minutes after being notified by Washington County Dispatch.

Local Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters in our community an average of every 40 hours.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provide relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and to respond to emergencies.  All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from Oregonians.  Financial gifts help provide shelter, food, clothing, counseling and other immediate assistance to those in need.  Call (503)284-1234 or visit www.redcross-pdx.org
