Local Red Cross volunteers assist Georgia tornado victims

PORTLAND, Ore. – March 3, 2007 - Exactly one month after the devastating Florida tornado, the American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter is again deploying volunteers to help residents affected by deadly tornadoes, this time to Central Georgia.

Shirley Newman will be leaving today for Georgia where she will serve as a client casework manager. Newman, a disaster volunteer with the Oregon Trail Chapter since 1997, has responded to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and 9/11. This will be her 27th disaster operation with the Red Cross. Newman will supervise client service volunteers, who assess the individual needs of affected residents and provide immediate financial assistance for food, lodging, clothing, and other necessities.

The Oregon Trail Chapter is awaiting an update from the Red Cross national organization for a request to deploy others to help with shelter operations and other functions.

Red Cross workers have set up five emergency shelters in the affected counties in Georgia and Alabama, providing a safe place to stay, hot meals, health assessments, counseling and other services.
