Local Red Cross volunteers respond to Nor’easter
Volunteers provide food, shelter and comfort to affected communities
PORTLAND, Ore. – April 18, 2007 - American Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers are now deploying to help residents of the Mid-Atlantic and New England in the wake of Sunday's powerful Nor'easter.
Nine volunteers from six different cities in the area will be leaving within 24 to 48 hours for several of the affected states. They will assist with client casework and mass care, computer support, logistics, and help the local Red Cross Chapters in the storm damaged communities.
Three additional names have been submitted to the Red Cross national organization for deployment to New Jersey and Massachusetts .
The American Red Cross has been rapidly expanding its disaster response after the Nor'easter that caused heavy snow, extensive flooding and widespread power outages. Since Friday, Red Cross chapters across the country have been contacted by the national deployment system to send volunteer aid to the area.
Up to eight inches of rain fell Sunday in some areas, leading to urban and river flooding, while high winds in coastal areas from North Carolina to Maine created shoreline flooding and erosion hazards. In the interior of New York and Vermont , the precipitation came in the form of 12-16 inches of snow. Dozens of shelters have been opened, providing warm, safe accommodations, food and comfort to hundreds of people.
