Sunday Fires Displace Residents in Gresham and NW Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – July 15, 2007– Volunteers from the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to two fires on Sunday. One, an early morning house fire in Gresham and the second an apartment fire on NW Kearney.

The Gresham house fire displaced a husband and wife and the Disaster Volunteers assisted with food and clothing to meet the residents’ immediate needs.

The apartment fire took place at the Gallagher Plaza apartments on NW Kearney in the late afternoon Sunday. Five units were affected by the fire and as of 8:00pm the local disaster volunteers where assisting 3 displaced residents with their emergency needs. The Red Cross is helping the disaster clients find shelter until they can return to their apartments. One unit suffered heavy smoke damage, three units had moderate to mild smoke and water damage.

The local Red Cross Chapter responds to disasters such as this to help the families meet their immediate needs – such as food, clothing and shelter. Trained Red Cross Disaster Volunteers also provide physical and mental health as needed to disaster clients.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare and respond to emergencies. Oregon Trail Chapter Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters every 40 hours on average. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from Oregonians.
