Disaster Services: Response and Preparation
Each year, the
American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disasters nationwide.
These include floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials
spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other
natural and manmade disasters. Trained Red Cross disaster workers
are available 24 hours a day to respond to these emergencies and
meet the immediate, disaster-caused needs of families.
Red Cross disaster assistance may include shelter, food, first
aid, and mental health services. In addition to these services,
the Red Cross may provide the means to pay for groceries, new
clothing, temporary housing, emergency home repairs, transportation,
basic household items, medicines and occupational tools. All Red
Cross disaster relief is provided free of charge thanks to generous
financial contributions from the public.
