Responding to a disaster requires quick thinking and standardized operations. Volunteers who wish to respond both locally and nationally must be trained in advance, as there is little time for training during the disaster.

Classes are structured for advancement into American Red Cross groups and activities. When a disaster happens, we call on those who are trained to perform specific functions.

Even a local fire response by our Disaster Action Team (DAT) requires the knowledge of ‘Client Services’ to provide for displaced clients; ‘Community Services’ to understand feeding and sheltering; ‘Partner Services’ for media and public relations; and the list goes on.

Select the Disaster Service Classes button on the left, and review the Requirement List to determine which classes you should take. Some classes are only offered monthly, quarterly, and annual. If your class is not listed on the current schedule, request to be placed on a waiting list. You will be notified when your class is scheduled or being offered at a nearby chapter.

By following our course structure, you will gain the ability to make disaster assessments, and even qualify to drive our emergency response vehicles. Some restrictions and prerequisites are required for specific activities.
